Covering Everything You Need To Know About The Holiday That Celebrates And Promotes Responsible Dog Ownership

Everyday is a good day to be a dog. However, August 26th is an especially good day to be a dog. The pet-themed holiday known as National Dog Day is celebrated every year on August 26th. This very special holiday commemorates and celebrates our furry four-legged friends. This article will discuss everything you need to know about National Dog Day including the history of the holiday, why we celebrate it, and how you can celebrate too.

Colleen Paige

A Brief History

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige. Colleen Paige is an animal rescue advocate, dog trainer, and pet & family lifestyle expert. She is responsible for creating several pet-themed holidays including National Cat Day, National Mutt Day, and National Wildlife Day. August 26th was the day that Colleen and her family adopted their first dog, Sheltie, at a local animal shelter. In honor of Sheltie and this life-changing moment, she decided to designate August 26th as National Dog Day.

The Purpose Of The Holiday

Like most pet-themed holidays, there is always a deeper meaning behind the holiday itself. National Dog Day is no exception, but actually has two purposes. The first is to raise awareness about adopting shelter dogs. There is a staggeringly high volume of dogs in animal shelters across the U.S. These shelter dogs need a good home and National Dog Day aims to help find them one.

Additionally, this holiday also encourages and supports dog ownership of all breeds. Whether you have a purebred or a mixed breed, your dog deserves to be celebrated. This holiday gives recognition to both dogs and their owners. Dog ownership is a very serious, yet rewarding experience. National Dog Day acknowledges and promotes responsible dog ownership just as much as the dogs themselves.

Why Dogs Are Worth Celebrating

So why celebrate dogs? Because dogs are more than just animals, they are our companions. They are loyal, playful, passionate, and will love you unconditionally. Dogs possess a certain sense of innocence that brings us back to our childhood days. They are incredible companions and they often have a way of enriching our lives and increasing our capacity to love. We believe that’s something worth celebrating.

How You Can Observe This Holiday

There are several different ways you can observe National Dog Day this August 26th. The best way is to adopt a dog from an animal shelter! If adoption isn’t a viable option for you, then consider donating to or volunteering at your local animal shelter. Most animal shelters are always in need of extra volunteers and/or supplies.

Additionally, you can also get involved with this incredible holiday by promoting it on social media. A simple post about National Dog Day can help educate people on the importance of adoption and responsible pet ownership. Be sure to use the handle #nationaldogday when you post and share this article too.
