Sands Point Preserve

Sands Point Preserve

Covering 216 acres of the former Guggenheim estate, Sands Point Preserve features six marked, dog-friendly trails winding through woods, open fields, and along a freshwater pond, with stunning views of the Long Island Sound. Dogs must be kept on leash at all times and are not allowed in the water. Admission is $15 per car, and annual passes are available. This is a favorite for its peaceful setting and variety of landscapes.

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site

The 83-acre grounds of President Teddy Roosevelt’s home are dog-friendly, with trails through woods and down to the beach (note: dogs are not allowed in the water). The 0.7-mile Nature Trail and the easier Carriage Path Trail are both great options. There’s no fee to enter, and dogs must be leashed at all times.

Eisenhower Park

With over 900 acres of open space, Eisenhower Park is ideal for long walks and also features a designated off-leash area. Whether you’re looking for relaxed strolls or a place to let your pup run free, this centrally located park is a local favorite.

Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge

A hidden gem with short trails through woods and fields, Target Rock offers beautiful views over Huntington Harbor and Long Island Sound. There’s a small beach popular with dog owners, but dogs are not allowed on the adjacent Gold Star Battalion Beach. As with all parks, keep your dog leashed and under control, especially during busy weekends.

Blydenburgh County Park

A local favorite, Blydenburgh features open fields, wooded trails, and a large dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs. There’s plenty of parking and water stations for thirsty pups.

Leash Laws & Tips

Leash Laws & Tips

Leash Laws & Tips

  • Leashes Required: Most parks and beaches require dogs to be on a leash no longer than six feet, except in designated off-leash areas.
  • Restricted Areas: Dogs are typically not allowed in picnic areas, playgrounds, buildings, or on improved boardwalks. Always check posted signs for specific restrictions.
  • Amenities: Many parks offer waste stations, water fountains, and separate play areas for small and large dogs. Bring your own water and waste bags, especially for beaches and trails with limited facilities.
  • Spring Hazards: With allergy season and increased wildlife activity, keep an eye on your dog and consult your vet about seasonal precautions.

Hidden Gems

  • Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge for quiet, scenic walks and a small, dog-friendly beach.
  • Mercadante Beach in Glen Cove for off-leash fun and nearby hiking trails.
  • Connetquot River State Park Preserve for a tranquil, nature-immersed experience.
