Celebrating The Holiday That Promotes And Educates People About The Importance Of Dog Training

Dogs are truly beautiful animals that have rightfully earned the title of man’s best friend. They are loyal, loving, adorable, and always there for you during good times and bad times. However, it’s important to remember that dogs are still animals that need proper training. That’s why the month-long holiday known as National Train Your Dog Month was created. Not familiar with this holiday? Don’t worry because Long Island Pet Service has you covered. This article will cover everything you need to know about National Train Your Dog Month along with some general advice regarding dog training.

The History Of The Holiday

National Train Your Dog Month was originally founded in 2010 by The Association Of Professional Dog Trainers. The Association Of Professional Dog Trainers, or A.P.D.T., is a professional organization of independent dog trainers that are dedicated to becoming better trainers through education. Knowledge is power and the dog loving people at A.P.D.T. do everything in their power to help further educate people in dog training. They offer online classes, webinars, trainer referrals, and more. This month-long holiday is simply another way to help promote and educate people about the importance of proper dog training.

How Can Dogs Be Dangerous?

Dogs are an important part of our lives. They act as service dogs, military dogs, police dogs, and as companion animals. However, it’s important to remember that they are still animals and can be potentially dangerous if not properly trained. Some breeds of dogs (Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Great Dane, Newfoundland, Great Pyrenees) can easily grow to be over 100 pounds. Aside from weight and size, dogs also possess a total of 42 teeth. These teeth include incisors (used to bite), canines (used to tear and shred flesh), and molars/premolars (used to crush and shear). Essentially, dogs can use their mouth as a weapon and as a tool for tearing or cutting food.

The Importance Of Dog Training

Dogs have the potential to be dangerous, but only if we let them become dangerous. Although dogs can be big, heavy, and intimidating, they are virtually harmless to people if they are properly trained. Dog training is a learning process for both the dog and the owner. It establishes ground rules of what behavior is acceptable and unacceptable. A dog is only as well behaved as they are well trained. Proper training will lead to good behavior. Good behavior leads to more opportunities for your dog to go places, socialize, and interact with other people or animals.

Keeping Our Furry Friends Happy And Healthy

Dogs experience anxiety and stress just like people. The best way to alleviate this anxiety and stress is to have them properly trained. Once your dog learns how to appropriately behave in social situations, they will begin to feel more comfortable around other people and animals. Essentially, dog training is healthy for your dog’s mental well-being and behavioral skills. Good training leads to a happier dog.

A Holiday Worth Celebrating

Here at Long Island Pet Service, we specialize in pet sitting and dog walking; Not dog training. However, we believe that every dog has a good heart and beautiful personality. The best way for that personality and heart to shine is through proper dog training. We encourage you to celebrate this month-long holiday by training or teaching your dog a few new commands/tricks. We also encourage you to spread the word about this wonderful educational holiday by sharing this article and educating others on the importance of dog training.
